the project.

JRNY Consulting partnered with the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) to explore how the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, the Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) agenda, and gender mainstreaming can be meaningfully integrated into Explosive Ordnance Risk Reduction (EORR) — commonly known as mine action.

Using a rigorous research design informed by Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and gender- and diversity-sensitive evaluation, this project examined how peace and security agendas interact with mine action policy and practice across diverse contexts. The research identified opportunities to strengthen inclusive approaches, enhance operational effectiveness, and better align mine action with global agendas that advance peace, equality, and justice.

objectives.

This research engagement was designed to:

  • Assess integration of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda’s pillars into EORR policies, programmes, and practice.

  • Examine how women’s inclusion initiatives influence the effectiveness and inclusivity of mine action activities.

  • Identify challenges, best practices, and learning in integrating gender perspectives with peace and youth-focused security agendas.

  • Generate evidence-based recommendations for strengthening synergies across WPS, YPS, and gender mainstreaming within EORR at national, regional, and international levels.

what we delivered.

JRNY Consulting provided a package of research-driven deliverables designed to deepen understanding and support future action:

  • In-Depth Case Studies: Contextual insights from Colombia, Somalia, and Ukraine illustrating how gender, peace, and youth agendas intersect with mine action practice across different humanitarian settings.

  • Peer Learning Workshops: Facilitated sense-making workshops in each country to validate findings, share perspectives, and deepen collective insight across stakeholders.

  • Synthesis Report: Analysis of patterns, challenges, and effective practices from the research that informed practical recommendations for aligning peace and security agendas with EORR programming.

These deliverables support GICHD and partners to improve how gender, youth inclusion, and wider peace and security priorities are embedded in mine action systems, strengthening both equity and operational effectiveness.

why it matters.

Mine action is critical to enabling safety, recovery, and sustainable development in environments affected by explosive hazards. However, mine action outcomes are shaped not only by technical processes but by who participates, who benefits, and how diverse experiences are understood and acted upon. By exploring how the WPS and YPS agendas intersect with gender mainstreaming, this work helps organisations better align humanitarian practice with global commitments to inclusion, justice, and lasting peace.

This project demonstrates JRNY Consulting’s commitment to equity-centred research that generates insights capable of transforming humanitarian systems and deepening intersectional inclusion in complex contexts.
